AMAZON PART 1 - Landscapes

Holaaaaa!

Yesterday I returned from the rainforests of Amazon and I have so much to tell you about the trip that it will take more posts than just one - and the posts will be full of pictures!
Last week I was on the jungle trip of YFU with all the other lovely exchange students, and I have to say that it was AWESOME. We spent two nights in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and the others in the middle of the jungle in a hotel called La casa del Suizo. The hotel was located next to the Napo river, which is a side river of the great Amazon.

The nature of Ecuador is something unbelievable, I felt like being inside a nature document all the time. The weather changed as fast as the weather in Finland in the summer, and finally even my skin got a bit tanned! The trip was full of sweat, mosquito bites, sunburns, mud and stomach problems, but also so many wonderful people, places and activities that this trip was totally worth the price!

I will continue with pictures and caption, sorry if the post is a bit confusing!

Matka Quitoon bussilla oli pelkkää hernerokkasumua
The way to Quito was basically just fog

...but when we got closer to Quito, the view from the window started to look more beautiful!

Vuoria tuskaisen pitkällä bussimatkalla viidakkoon
The mountains on the freaking long way to the jungle

Jokia ja vesiputouksia ja metsiä ja vuoria
Rivers and waterfalls and forests and mountains

Perjantaina oltiin vaelluksella sademetsän siimeksessä
On friday we went hiking in the rainforest

Vietimme paljon aikaa joella, uiden, laskien koskea uimarenkailla, veneillen, sukeltaen ja puisilla lautoilla lipuen.
We spent a lot of time by the river, swimming, sailing, diving and playing with umm swimming rings (wtf is the english name?) and wooden rafts

Paratiisi (tahtoo takaisin!)
Paradise (me wants back!)

I'm really tired with this family situation and I hope that we will find a new family soon. I feel really unwanted and outsider here, and all the problems are really pulling me down. When I feel bad here at "home", I think too much about my finnish family and for example today I feel so damn homesick. I miss also my friends and hobbies. And my dear boyfriend. Tomorrow I will luckily return to school, and I tend to escape my problems to the conservatory, where I can enjoy the company of all the lovely people and one of the most important things in my life: music.

Winds of change

Heips,

Just when I was starting to get used to my life here in Ecuador and have a routine and rhythm in my life, some upper power decided to press the "replay"-button and start this whole thing all over again.

This tuesday my hostmum wanted to have a talk with me, and she told me that after a long thinking process she had arrived at the conclusion that taking an exchange student to the family has been more difficult than she thought it would. I don't help enough at the house, I'm not clean enough and I don't take part to the chores. Being a single mom of two children is hard enough for her, and I have to change family.

Yeah I know the quality is terrible, I'm sorry

Right now I feel a bit homeless and lost. While I'm so far from my real home, this is the only place I can call home, and sometimes I feel like I'm being thrown away from my own home. It feels a bit unfair that I have to start it all over again and get used to a new life and new routines. The last few days I've being doing my best to avoid being at home, because the atmosphere there is so awkward and uncomfortable for us all. While waiting for the change my feelings are going from dissapointment to enthusiasm and hope. This just wasn't my place.

Muuten onneksi sujuu hyvin.

Otherwise I feel fine. In the school I've finally become a part of the course, and when they are planning their weekend etc. I'm invited too, like this weekend when I was in a birthday party of a classmate. I'm no more the funny and silent finnish girl, but a part of the class. They laugh at my jokes and they're not afraid to talk with me. I can almost be myself :D

I've been spending too much time thinking. Thinking about my past, things that have brought me here and made me the person that I am now. I've been going through my old photos and diary pages and missing that past, missing the people that I grew apart from and the people that I let go. I wish I was brave enough to write to those people and tell them I miss them.

Menneisyyden lisäksi myös tulevaisuus näyttää tällä hetkellä kivalta. Keskiviikkona lähden YFU:n viidakkoretkelle, JEEEAAAHHH olen superinnoissani koska a) pääsen pois kodin kiusallisesta tunnelmasta b) näen kaikki  i h a n a t  kanssavaihtarit c) saan kuvamateriaalia blogiini d) koska daa, Amazon on varmasti supercool!

Hui!

My future looks also very bright right now. On Wednesday I'll go to the jungle trip of YFU, YEAAAAHHH I'm just super excited, because a) I can escape the awkward atmosphere of this house b) I'll see all the  l o v e l y  fellow exchange students c) I can take new photos to my blog d) just because duh, it's Amazon, it must be supercool!
Also, while writing this I got a message that I might have a possible new host family already, but I'll hear more about it tomorrow. Yikes!

Kuvat on otettu meidän parvekkeeltamme.

Sobreviviendo (English version!)

Hola todos!

I got some complaining about the last post because it was only in finnish, so I translated it (tried to) in English :)

Everybody: "You should start some hobbies, maybe you'd get more friends that way?"
Oona: "I don't know any hobbies that I could do with other people, I'm not a sports person or anything..."

This week has been more positive than negative. (And btw I've been here 60 days now, which means two months!) School started, two weeks of holiday ended and it feels good to be in the school because we're actually DOING something there. There are still lessons where we don't have a teacher, or lessons when there is a teacher but we're still doing nothing, but not that much anymore. I'm a part of the school a bit more now, and the others are interacting more with me and I'm happier. Still, I have to TRY all the time, to just go and join them eventhough I don't want to, open my mouth even if I'm tired and my brain's not working and smile even if I'm feeling very sad.

I'm superproud of my spanish at the moment. Other exchange students are boasting how they already think and dream in the language of their exchange country - well, I don't, but it doesn't matter, because I can already communicate in almost every situation, and "No entiendo" is not the phrase that I use the most anymore. Ecuadorians are very eager to tell me how fluent my spanish already is and how huge is the improvement of my spanish.

♥♥♥

It was a whole lot easier to return to my everyday life, when I finally had something to DO. I started my piano lessons in the local conservatory, and oh, the moment of happiness when I touched the piano again... <3 (Even though it's an electronic piano because they don't have an acoustic one... #justecuadorthings)

I'll visit the conservatory three times a week in the future, and I was also offered a job as a piano teacher (because I was so damn good lol). I'll have to talk with YFU about that, because the rules say "no working", but maybe it would be ok if I teach people for free and get free lessons in return.

♥♥♥

Soooo. Music brings people together, as I've come to notice like a hundred times in my life. The first visit to the conservatory was kinda boring, because the locals are quite lazy when it comes to returning from the holidays (this phenomenom was seen in the school, too) and the building was pretty empty. But my third time there was way better: five girls came to say bienvenidos and introduced theirselves and we had a nice little conversation! Everybody actually WANTED to talk with me and they were interested in me! This is what I've been waiting for!

♥♥♥

There has been some other stuff going on, too. I went cycling with Daniel and his mother, and that wasn't just some little nice trip around the town: on the first time there was 200 of us and police cars to guarantee our safety in the traffic. What a nice way to get to know the city and also get some exercise!

The second time was even better. A little less people there, like only 40, but it was just awesome: 35 km through rain and muddy little bumpy roads - in the dark and sometimes even without streetlights... It was a hard ride for my muscles, especially when we climbed to a high hill with the bikes... I was just repeating the phrase "yo puedo, yo puedo" for myself and the fellow cyclists, and finally I reached the top. Going downhill was just amazing: freaking fast and dangerous because of the wet streets, but with an amazing view of the city lights that continued eternally and dissapeared into the fog. AND MY MUSCLES (wait, what muscles) WEREN'T EVEN HURTING THE NEXT DAY!

I also made a few friends in that tour, beause everybody wanted to know the story of a random gringa amongst them.

♥♥♥

I think that that's it for this time. There are always these little moments of joy: when I find my piano sheets AND my headphones after one week of searching, when my mom hugs me, when I have a nice chat with the taxi driver... The culture shows me new faces every day. When in Finland we have some rehearsals in case of a fire, here it's the same with earthquakes (what you shoul do is hide under your table and then walk in a dumb-looking line to the meeting point and sit there in s weird spiral). In the school olympics all the classes represent a different country and even buy a new uniform for those competitions (we're Italia, but the unifrom is in the colours of Finland, blue and white!). The ministry of health organizes a day when we have to listen to a speech about healthy lifestyle and then eat some fruit salad (everybody had to bring something to it, and I was cutting these two huge watermelons for two hours...).

I want to add the favourite quote of Hannah in the end:
"Every day might not be good, but there's something good in every day."

Besos!

Sobreviviendo

Muitakin juttuja olen puuhannut.

Siinä missä Suomessa on paloharjoituksia koulussa, on täällä harjoitukset maanjäristysten varalta (mennään pöytien alle ja sitten kuljetaan tyhmännäköisessä jonomuodostelmassa kokouspaikalle istumaan ympyrässä). Kouluolympialaisia varten joka luokalle hankitaan oma joukkuepuku, ja jokainen luokka edustaa jotain maata (me oltiin Italia... Suomen väreissä). Terveysministeriö järjestää teemapäivän, jolloin kuunnellaan ensin luentoa ja sitten syödään valtavaa hedelmäsalaattia, johon jokaisen piti tuoda jotain (pilkoin kahta valtavaa melonia kaksi tuntia). Loppuun Hannahin lempilausahdus: "Every day might not be good but there's something good in every day."

I woke up this morning way to early just to find out that all my plans had been ruined. I was supposed to go running at 10.30 am with Hélène, a French exchange student, but ta-dah, Ecuador happened, and my mom woke me up at nine o'clock telling me that she'll go to hospital to see her sick grandmother. Because I don't have the keys, I was stuck in this house and I had to cancel my meeting with Hélène. I felt a bit anxious because I'd really need some sports, and the fat on my waist started screaming horrible things for my brain.

When my mom asked me to brush the floor of the whole house - without music because my phone and headphones are in the hands of some random columbian idiots - was a mental chaos ready. Thank god one clever quote popped up from among all the depressing thoughts: "You, and only you, are responsible for your own happiness." Like I mentioned in my last post, we have to work to feel happy. And what could save a bad day better than some good food and good friends?

Kunnialla suoriuduimme!

I asked my mom if I could invite some friends to spend time and cook with me, and thank god my mom found the idea great, and also told me to tell my friends to bring their swimsuits, too, so we could spend the rest of the evening chilling in the pool. Not bad :)

At one o'clock we went to do some shopping with Daniel and Hannah, and our food cost 60$. Oopsie. Back at my house Hélène joined us, and we started our difficult project in a tiny kitchen, in which the temperature was nearly 40 degrees because of the oven and the sunshine. But we did well!

Hélène the pasta princess

Our meal included three plates: salad as a starter, spaghetti bolognese as the main course and real finnish pancakes (with strawberries, maple syrup, cream, chocolate etc...) for dessert. It was wonderful to cook, and the food was even more wonderful. For heaven's sake, the bolognese sauce of Hélène and Hannah was probably the best I've ever eaten. I put some cinnamon to the pancakes to bring some more taste, and that was a great idea. And the salad... Oh how we all have missed fresh, green and healthy salad, which is NOT ruined with too much vinegar and lemon juice like the locals love to do.

We had some wild time at the pool, too, with our stomachs full and minds happy. I will stop complaining about not having friends; I think that these lovelies count as ones. After my friends left, I was just standing in the shower for like half an hour, smiling. I had an amzing day behind me, aaaaand I was also enjoying the perfect-temperatured water, which wasn't just burning hot or ice-cold as usually. You really have to get off your bed and DO things to be happy, and fight against the boredom. Thanks for this day everybody - myself included!

No, they're not holding hands :D

GUAPOS

I think that everybody who wants to read this in English already knows the story of Elena. Rest in peace Elena Haasen.

Stayin' alive, stayin' alive

Pieni viesti niille, jotka sanovat vaihtovuoden olevan helppoa aikaa: joko valehtelette, tai sitten olette tunteettomia hirviöitä. Kaikilla, joilla olen puhunut, on ylä- ja alamäkiä. Myös minulla.

Ensimmäiset kaksi viikko koulussa olivat melko lailla kamalia.

A little message for those who say that a year of exchange is a piece of cake: either you're lying or then you are just emotionless monsters. Everyone has their ups and downs, including me.

The first two weeks of school were quite horrible. I was feeling lonely as hell, and I really felt like I didn't belong there and just felt like crying all the time. For some weird reason nobody wanted to talk with me, and Marie, another exchange student, told me that the others talk that I want no friends. WHAT? I was feeling desperate; I tried my best to be happy, cheerful and easy to approach, but nothing really helped.

So many things just made me feel worse: the fact that already the YFU Finland told us that "in your new school you will be like celebrities, everybody wants to talk and be with you, and everybody is so damn interested in what you're saying", the fact that all the other ecuadorian exchanger students told that they had 100 friend requests in just two days, or the fact that all my finnish friends said that "oh you never had problems to get friends here in Finland", or the fact that some anonymous persone, for whom I was crying in skype, told me that "come on, you get an amazing opportunity and your parents pay thousands for you, and then you just keep on complaining and crying how awful everything is there, you sound like a spoiled little drama queen".

No new photos, so I stole some from my friends:

Asioilla on kuitenkin tapana järjestyä.

However, every cloud has its silver lining. Nothing here is easy, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible. Everythings going really well with my family, and with the language: I can communicate with spanish so much better than a month ago. The third week of school wasn't that hard anymore, and people came to talk with me more eagerly. I got invited to my first fiesta, and tomorrow I will have a movie night with my classmates. Daniel (German guy) and Hannah (Danish girl) are my to saviours; two amazing human beings who always give me support and company, and totally agree with me when I say that the life of an exchange student is never easy. This place feels more home every day.

Of course life gives you lemons just when everything is starting to feel better. This morning, I was walking with my little sister Mia and her friend, and writing a message with my phone. Out of nowhere ran a man, took my phone and escaped, and his friend picked him up with a motorbike. And poof, there went my phone, 16G memory card full of pictures, music and my writings, the memory card of my camera, my finnish SIM card and my headphones. Gracias Ecuador, muy amable. I swear that the street was empty ten seconds earlier when I was looking around. I spent the whole morning crying, swearing and hitting my head against the wall.

You won't believe how hard the life of an exchange student can be.

Despite all the bad luck, I learned something pretty important today. During all this time that I've spent here, I've always been making sure that the four most important things are still safe: my computer, my phone, my camera and my wallet. After losing one of those things today and after two hours of crying I realized how easy it is to fill the whole it left. I realized that I have something even more important, in Finland but also here: truly wonderful people around me. Thank you Daniel, Hannah, Marie and Pauline for taking my attention away from these depressing thoughts and for this lovely evening, thank you Finnish friends for all the stupid and lovely attempts to make me feel better, and thanks for all the lovely Ecuadorians (my family and a few friends) who cared, worried and checked that I'm ok and didn't get hurt. While walking these streets in the future I'll hold my phone very tight, but these friends I'll hold even tighter. ♥
